AFCON U-23 Championship: Egypt Draw Nigeria

Two first half penalties converted by Oghenekaro Etebo proved inadequate for Nigeria’s Dream Team VI as they drew 2-2 with Egypt at the 2015 Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal.

Nigeria had displayed defensive frailties in their opening game of the competition against Mali but showed notable improvements in the win over the Egyptians in M’bour.

The opening exchanges were dominated by Nigeria with quick passing without really creating clear cut openings.

Nigeria’s first opening arrived on 14 minutes when an uncharacteristic defensive error freed Etebo at the edge of the box but his hurried shot was blocked.

Egypt produced the real first clear-cut opening of the game in the 19th minute but Karim Waleed Sayed Saleh Hassan’s effort from a tight angle was easily saved by Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Emmanuel Daniel.

That miss was to prove costly as Nigeria scored the game’s only goal a minute later through a hotly-disputed penalty converted by Oghenekaro Etebo.

Nigeria doubled their lead on the half hour after Etebo converted yet another penalty.

In the second half, Nigeria imploded and conceded twice within seven minutes of the restart.

Ahmed Ibrahim scored the first for the Egyptians on 47 minutes while the luckless Amaefule Chizoba put past his own keeper in the 52nd minute.

Nigeria thus slipped to second place in Group B despite amassing four points from two matches.

The Dream Team will round off their preliminary campaign against the group leaders, Algeria on December 5 at Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, Dakar.
