Simon swept home a corner from eight yards after the Zulte-Waregem defence failed to clear their lines. The 20-year-old had not scored for Gent before Friday’s game in all competitions this season.
He scored seven league goals for the club last season.
Simon’s heroics on Friday at the GHELAMCO-Arena sees Gent remain at the summit of the league standings with 37 points from 18 matches.
