There could be some good news for Arsenal in the January transfer window as the club are preparing to meet the £32m release clause for Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa, according to the Daily Star.
The striker has been in superb form this season and already has 23 goals in all competitions, including four Champions League efforts.
The Gunners meanwhile are enduring something of a crisis in attack as both first choice forward Olivier Giroud and backup Nicklas Bendtner are out injured.
It means that Lukas Podolski is the only fit option upfront and manager Arsene Wenger has recognised the need for more support in that area.
Costa has a buyout cost of £32m – a price that is relatively cheap when the club were prepared to pay over £40m for Luis Suarez in the summer – but after the £42.4m outlay on Mesut Ozil on September 3 it would mean a huge year of investment for the north London side.
However, with the chances of signing Suarez now extremely unlikely and other options such as Gonzalo Higuain having moved elsewhere, Wenger could do a lot worse than the 25-year-old Atletico star.
There will be plenty of competition for the Brazilian born Spain attacker though and the Premier League leaders would have to act quickly to land Costa, with sides such as Chelsea also interested in the Atleti man.
Bringing in someone of the calibre of the Spaniard would really signal Wenger and the club’s intent to genuinely compete for English title this term, with the team currently in first position after 20 matches
