KESHI: Mikel Should Win The African Footballer Of The Year

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has picked Mikel Obi to be named Africa’s best player of 2013, saying the award will boost the team.

Chelsea star Mikel is in the running for the award along with Ivorian stars Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba with the winner to be announced at a ceremony on Thursday.

“It will boost the team and Mikel and all Nigerians because it has been a long time since we last won the award and I know we deserve to win this year,” said the Nigeria coach, who is also in the race for the Coach of the Year.

Mikel played a big role as Nigeria won a third Africa cup of Nations and also helped Chelsea win a first-ever UEFA Europa League trophy. He was also outstanding at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Ethiopia coach Sewnet Bishaw said he will also not be surprised were a Nigerian player to clinch the coveted African Player of the Year Award.

“Nigeria was obviously the best football nation in Africa last year and I won’t be surprised if a player from the country emerges the player of the year. They deserve to get the award,” Bishaw said.
