An interesting story passed under our radar last week about attempts from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to enter the world of football club ownership.
According to the New York Post, who relied on El Pais, Trump last week tried to purchase Colombian side Atletico Nacional.
Trump, of course, isn’t much loved by latinos at the moment, after he described Mexicans who try to come to America, saying: “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”
On Thursday, the Post reported an update to their original piece, announcing that Trump had stopped looking at buying Atletico Nacional, and he’s now interested in other Colombian teams instead.
Why? Because Atletico Nacional rejected his $100m takeover bid. Trump issued a statement that said:
National wants $150 million to sell the club. For us, the proposal is unacceptable. Maybe they think we’re stupid.
We had offered $100 million and that it was an important offer. We are not willing to offer more and continue negotiations. For us it is permanently closed. Now we will evaluate other clubs in Colombia, but not only.
Maybe someone should tell Trump that if he really wants to own a serious football team, for around 150 million pounds he could buy Aston Villa from fellow American Randy Lerner.
Donald Trump v Roman Abramovich. How good would that be!
