AFCON 2017: Egypt Sure Of Group Ticket As Super Eagles Trail Pharoahs

Nigeria will have a huge mountain to climb when the qualifiers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations resumes in March next year as Egypt, who are top of Group G of the qualifiers say they have no plans to relinquish top spot in the group.

The Super Eagles trail Egypt by two points after two match days with the Pharaohs of Egypt grabbing all maximum points so far in the qualifiers.

They defeated Chad 5-1 in N’Djamena last weekend and are aiming for Nigeria’s scalp when the double header takes centre stage next year.

The Super Eagles barren draw in Dar Es Salaam meant Egypt opened a two point gap at the top of the group with Nigeria trailing them ahead of the double header between both sides from March next year.

Egypt’s first choice goalkeeper Serif Ekramy has sounded out the battle cry as he says nothing will stop Egypt from qualifying for her first Afcon in six years.

“We want to write history again. We did not qualify for the last three editions but this time we will do our best to go to Gabon,”Ekramy told Egyptian sports website www.yallakora.com

“We don’t look at the names of other teams in the group. We are not afraid of anyone not even Nigeria.”he added.

Egypt’s head coach Hector Cuper also reiterated Ekramy’s stance by saying his team will treat every opponent in the group with the same level of respect.

“We will treat Nigeria as we did Chad and Tanzania, we will train seriously for all the teams,”Cuper said.

Supersport.com also spoke to Egyptian sports journalist Tarek Talat who said there a new wave of optimism across the country that Egypt will make a long awaited return to Africa’s flagship football showpiece.

“There is a lot of buzz going around in Egypt right now. A lot of fans are confident we can make it to Gabon for the Cup of Nations,”Talat said

“This new generation of player hold a lot of promise and there is a huge interest in the team as usual. We hope we make a return to the Nations Cup. I think it’s long overdue.”he added.
