NPFL Review: Enyimba Maintains Lead, Pillars Trash Abia Warriors & More

Six-time champions, Enyimba International maintained their four-point lead in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with a 2-0 win over Dolphins FC on Sunday.

Andrew Abalogu opened score for Enyimba via a super header from close range. Ifeanyi Anaemena scored the Elephant's second to effectively strike the final nail into the Dolphins coffin.

Kufre Ebong netted the Wolves’ opening goal on the stroke of half time while Osadiaye Joseph made it 2-0 in the second half.


Stanley Dimgba added the coupe de grace late on as the Wolves finished with a flourish.

Wolves now have 51 points from 29 matches.

In Akure, Sunshine Stars lost valuable ground in the title race as they lost 2-3 to Nasarawa United at the Akure Township Stadium, to stay at the coattails on the leaders, Enyimba and second-placed Warri Wolves.

Okiki Afolabi got the scoring underway quite early as he headed home inside the first 60 seconds of the contest.

Thomas Zenke however equalized for visitors in a game which produced five stunning goals.

Sunshine Stars had a chance to retake the lead midway into the second half but Tunde Adeniji missed a golden opportunity from the penalty spot.

Esosa Igbinoba put the visitors 2-1 up before Okiki Afolabi equalized almost immediately for the Akure club.

Igbinoba was to have the final say as he netted the winner late on in unquestionably the day’s most explosive fixture.

Kennedy Boboye’s men have now dropped down the standings as Wikki Tourists claimed a hard-fought point in Makurdi to leap frog the Akure club as the league enters the home strait.

The Tourists drew 1-1 with Lobi Stars at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi with Enockela Akleche's deflected effort rescued a point for the hosts.

In Jalingo, FC Taraba defeated Giwa FC 1-0 as they continued their spirited fight to escape the drop.

Boris Konan scored the winner for the Jalingo club following a precise cross from Stephen Adah on six minutes.

Ubong Ekpai scored the opener for Kano Pillars in the Sai Masu Gida’s 3-0 victory over win over Abia Warriors at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

Azeez Shobowale scored the second while Nafiu Ibrahim netted the third for the champions who completed a good day in the office.

Sharks FC beat FC Ifeanyiubah 1-0 in Port Harcourt with Aremu Afeez getting the only goal of the game on 65 minutes.

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, Rangers came from a goal down to beat Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) 2-1.

Akwa United defeated Heartland 1-0 in Uyo while Bayelsa United defeated El-Kanemi Warriors 4-1 on an explosive match day that accommodated one away win, one score draw, eight home wins and 26 goals.
