Iker has never hidden the fact that he wanted to hang up his gloves at his boyhood club and end his playing career at the Bernabéu. He is now leaving Los Blancos sooner than he had hoped, although he will leave as a hero, a title he deserves based on his impeccable service record at the club.
In October last year, Casillas gave an interview in which he said that Real Madrid was more than just his team, the Bernabéu was his home. "Real Madrid is my home", Iker emphasised. "I never had a neighbourhood or school team. I was 8 when I started playing in tournaments and I was 9 when they signed me. I came through the ranks and I consider this my home. I've always been a part of Real Madrid. I developed as a player and a person here. I grew up here and it's my home".
He said he could not see himself in another team's colours: "It's hard to imagine myself at another club. I'd like to retire here, although I'd like to try another league first, just to appreciate Real Madrid more. If I went to another team, I think I'd value and understand Real Madrid more, and realise what this club really means to everyone else, as well as myself".
