Ghana's Daniel Opare Signs For Augsburg

Ghana’s Daniel Opare has joined German side Augsburg after sealing an exit from FC Porto. The 24-year-old full-back mutually ended his contract with the Portuguese side due to lack of first team opportunities. He joined after the 2014 World Cup with Ghana but was loaned out to Besiktas in Turkey this January.

The Turks failed to agree on a fee with Porto for the former Real Madrid trainee to make his stay permanent at the end of the season.

Opare’s return to fight for first team chances with the Dragons suffered a huge blow when manager Julen Lopetegui demoted him to train with the junior team during the summer pre-season. With the absence of Maxi Pereira Ricardo, the manager chose to call youngsters David Bruno and Victor Garcia at the detriment of the Ghanaian international in his senior team pre-season squad.

Augsburg who are on the verge of selling another Ghanaian, Baba Abdul Rahman to English champions Chelsea, have moved to sign Opare for three years and handed him the number 4 shirt.

Opare has revealed that countryman Baba played a key role in his decision to join the Germans when the club offered him a deal.

“I look forward to the challenge of playing for FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga. I got nothing but positive feedback about the club from Baba Rahman and that urged me to sign,” he said in an interview with the club’s website.

Opare is a known right-back but also fits in very well at the left side of defence.
