Man United: Van Gaal Drops De Gea From Opening Match Against Tottenham

Louis van Gaal has confirmed that David De Gea will not play in tomorrow’s opener against Tottenham Hotspur, citing the distraction surrounding his possible move to Real Madrid.

De Gea’s proposed move to Real Madrid has been the transfer saga of the summer, and it isn’t over yet.

Despite the fact that the Premier League season starts tomorrow, De Gea could theoretically still move to Madrid, with the transfer window open until the end of the month.

It’s quite a bizarre situation: De Gea has made crystal clear his desire to leave, but United are playing hard ball with Madrid, and are determined not to lose face as they have in the past with David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo; it’s become a question of honour.

Van Gaal said:

”De Gea will not play.

‘A player is also a human being. He cannot manage that. We will have to see who starts.’

That leaves the goalkeeping position a mystery for tomorrow’s opener against Spurs: Sergio Romero or Sam Johstone look like the most likely candidates, with Victor Valdes having little or no chance, having been demoted to U21 duty.
