Xavi Says Louis Van Gaal Also Humiliated Him At Barcelona

Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez has revealed that Man United boss Louis Van Gaal used to humiliate him during the Dutchman’s tenure as boss at the Nou Camp between 1997- 2000.

In an interview with Marca, the 35-year-old who has won more trophies than any other Spanish player in history, recalls his very first La Liga title which he won under current United boss Louis Van Gaal back in 1998. It’s clear that Barcelona’s all time appearance maker won’t forget the influence the Dutchman had on the Spaniards career.

“I will remember him all my life, but for better not worse,” Xavi told Marca . “He was very direct.

“One day he would bury you and humiliate you in front of the group and the next day he would tell me I was Zidane. That is the way he is and in time it has a positive effect.”

Xavi also took the time to mention Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho who worked under Louis Van Gaal during the Spaniard’s early stages at Barcelona. Although Xavi acknowledges the Portuguese coach’s talents it’s clear that the 35-year-old doesn’t share a fondness for the special one’s style of football.

“I respect him a lot although I don’t agree with his way of playing,” Xavi added. “He helped me a great deal in the three years he was at Barcelona. At that time we spoke the same language and believed in the same things.

“He came to the Barca B team and he coached us and worked with us according to the Barca philosophy. Now he looks on another path – winning above all else. That is not our way of doing things”

Since leaving Barcelona Xavi now plays his football for Qatari club Al Sadd, and the midfielder grabbed an assist in his debut during a 4-0 victory over Mesaimeer on Sunday.
