34 African Players Makes UEFA Champions League Group Stage

The 32 remaining clubs in the UEFA Champions League have submitted their squad lists and there are no less than 34 Africans spread amongst the teams, with the group stage set to kick-off later this month.

Thirteen of the clubs have no Africans registered for their Champions League campaign, including Italian champions and last year’s runners-up Juventus.

The Old Lady have Ghanaian Kwadwo Asamoah on their books, but given that he is still working his way back to full fitness after a serious injury last year, they have opted to exclude him from their UCL roster.

Asatana – the first Kazakhstani team to qualify for the group stages – boast three Africans in the shape of Foxi Kethevoama, Patrick Twumasi and Junior Kabananga.

Chelsea is another team with three players from our continent – Abdul Rahman Baba, John Obi Mikel and Bertrand Traore – though it could have been four had they included new signing Papy Djilobodji.

The Ivorian duo of Yaya Toure and Wilfried Bony will have key roles to play if Manchester City are to finally challenge in the premier continental competition, while Mohamed Salah, Seydou Keita and Gervinho will look to inspire Roma to a strong showing.
