The 28-year-old striker is the club's longest serving player and has watched on as the playing staff has undergone a summer overhaul.
New attackers Rudy Gestede, Jordan Ayew and Adama Traore have all been added to the forward line but Sherwood insists Agbonhalor is still the main man.
"Gabby has got a huge part to play," Sherwood said.
"He's club captain. I don't underestimate the role he plays at this club. It's crucial for a manager to have some lieutenants.
"Gabby is one of them along with the other boys who have been around this club for a long time."
