NBA: Golden State Warriors Set New Winnig Streak Record

So much for Pat Riley's “disease of more.” The defending champion Golden State Warriors have started better than any team in NBA history, winning their first 16 games in dominant fashion. The latest: a 111-77 victory over the lowly Los Angeles Lakers at Oracle Arena on Tuesday.

This was a typical Warriors blowout. They outscored Los Angeles 30-11 in the first quarter and ended the third up 89-55. No Golden State starter even saw the floor in the final frame. Stephen Curry scored a game-high 24 points on 10-for-21 shooting, including 4 for 12 from 3-point range, which is an off night for him. Curry added nine assists, four rebounds and two steals, though, and didn't turn the ball over in his 30 minutes.

Kobe Bryant scored four points on 1-for-14 shooting for the Lakers, and the Warriors' defense prevented them from even passing the ball cleanly, let alone getting open shots. Golden State, meanwhile, was able to push the pace, share the ball and seemingly find easy looks whenever it wanted to.

The 1948-49 Washington Capitols and 1993-94 Houston Rockets are now co-owners of the second-longest streak to start a season. After eclipsing them, Curry said in his television interview that it was "special" to be in the history books.

"We're trying to play at a high level every night," Curry said on TNT. "It's a pretty cool accomplishment to start the season 16-0 and do something that's never been done in NBA history. So we gotta keep it going. A lot of season left, but we're on the right track.

"A lot of players have played in this league, a lot of great teams," he continued. "And nobody has accomplished what this team has tonight. So we gotta be proud of those type of moments, and we'll celebrate a little bit and then look forward to Friday night."

Entering the game, Golden State was beating opponents by an average of 14.4 points per game and Curry was on pace for 404 made 3-pointers, which would destroy his own NBA record of 286 3-pointers. No one shoots like the Warriors, no one passes like them and no one has anything close to their level of versatility. While the Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Clippers managed to hang with the Warriors, they have always found a way to take over when necessary. There is no telling when this streak will end.
