All African Games: Yahaya Mohammed Assures Nigerians Of 15 Gold Medals In Weight Lifting

The Vice President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Yahaya Mohammed, has assured weight lifting enthusiasts that Nigeria’s participation in the 11th All Africa Games, Congo 2015, will be a huge success.

The Games are scheduled to hold from September 4 to 19 in Congo Brazzaville, and the NWF boss says the lifters would haul not less than 15 gold medals for Team Nigeria.

Mohammed spoke on Tuesday, just as the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Alhassan Yakmut, said that he was pleased with the level of preparedness being displayed by the athletes in their various camps in readiness for the Games.


Weightlifting is one of the sports Team Nigeria is hoping will haul in medals in Congo, and Mohammed said the lifters, who are currently camped in Abuja have what it takes to do the country proud.

“We will win the highest number of gold medals for Team Nigeria in Congo and I am happy our lifters are living up to expectation in camp,” he said.

He said that a total of 19 lifters from the 30 currently in camp would make the trip to Congo.

The NSC boss, Yakmut, said that the decision of the Games organisers to restore the weightlifting and taekwondo events had brightened the chances of Team Nigeria, just as he praised the athletes and their handlers for the wonderful work going on in the various camps.

Team Nigeria is operating various campsite for the athletes ahead the Games. While special sports athletes are at the Liberty Stadium in Ibadan, boxers, volleyball, gymnastics and table tennis are in Lagos. Athletics, weightlifting and wrestling are training in Abuja.
