MARK SCHWARZER: We Didn't Park Two Buses Against Liverpool

Chelsea's performing stand in goalie Mark Schwarzer has said Chelsea got their tactics spot on as they beat Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield and has slammed critics of their gameplan.

The Blues produced a solid defensive display at Anfield, with the Australian goalkeeper putting in a superb performance between the sticks to snuff out the prolific Luis Suarez, while Demba Ba and Willian were able to provide their goals on Merseyside.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers claimed his opposite number, Jose Mourino, had ‘parked two buses’ to stop his side – a comment which Schwarzer took umbrage with.

“We played right down to the gameplan and it worked very, very well,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“Obviously we tried to slow the game down, that was obvious from the start, and it worked in our favour. It frustrated Liverpool and it frustrated their fans and the pressure started to mount on them.

“They had everything in their own hands and they really needed to win to continue the momentum and keep it in their own hands but the longer we went without conceding, the more pressure we applied by taking our time with things and the more frustrated they became.

“The bottom line is there was a tactic we employed and it worked down to a tee. We play within the rules, we played as we thought we could get a result and frustrate Liverpool at Anfield and it worked.

“Football is a strange game and there are all sorts of different tactics you can play. A couple of weekends ago there was a very open and free-flowing game between Liverpool and Manchester City and everyone loved it because of the amount of goals that were scored, but the bottom line is we wanted to go there and win the game.

“We didn’t want to just go there and sit back and just try to get a result or park two buses in front of our goal, like it was suggested. We wanted to be strong defensively but we also wanted to attack them and score goals on the counter or whenever the opportunities came along and it worked perfectly for us.”
